GREATER BALLITO OPERATIONS CENTRE

Precautionary Security Planning for the Long Weekend

Thursday, 5 August 2021

The GBOC Security Cluster met yesterday afternoon with SAPS, KDM Community Safety, Private Security, Community Policing Forums and Neighbourhood Watches, Ihawu Lethu Farm Watch, the Dolphin Coast Taxi Association, the Ballito UIP and Ward Councillors to collaborate on security preparations for the coming long weekend and into next week.

In the aftermath of the recent unrest, and because of increased concerns about the potential for further unrest, we met to confirm preparations ahead of the weekend and into next week with a focus on roles and responsibilities.

SAPS and KDM confirmed that they have an operational plan in place to ensure law enforcement presence at the major beaches across the area as well as heightened patrols and visibility. SAPS have extended their longer shifts from 1 August, with a heightened state of readiness to respond to any issues should such occur.

The Community Policing Forums and Neighbourhood Watches will also increase patrols and visibility in collaboration with SAPS and private security.

We wish to remind community members that SAPS and KDM are the only law and bylaw enforcement authorities and that members of the public or private security must not take any matters into their own hands.

Further, we request that community members do not forward fear-mongering voice-notes or other media to community WhatsApp groups. Should you come across any information, especially if first-hand, please contact the GBOC* via WhatsApp or your local CPF, neighbourhood watch or Private Security.

We are hoping for an incident-free weekend and a calm week ahead. We urge all residents to be mindful of the very difficult and stressful time we have all been through and to steer clear of any social conflict at this time of recovery.
